  About The School

Deshler Middle School

Tuscumbia is a small town in the heart of the Shoals in Northwest Alabama. We have a population of around 8,400 people, many of whom rely on us here in the Tuscumbia City Schools to provide a quality education for our students. Here at Deshler Middle School, we work as hard as we can to provide the best education possible for our students.

In a culture of Friday Night Lights, Deshler Middle School strives to make sure that our academic achievements shine as brightly as our athletic achievements. Historically, Deshler Middle School has been able to do a lot with limited resources and our stakeholders are satisfied with the education we provide to their students. In the past few years, Deshler Middle has seen many changes. Many of our veteran classroom teachers have taken on leadership roles within the system, providing openings that have been filled with several young, enthusiastic new teachers. The new administration and staff have been able to work together to be more open to new ideas and different ways to provide the best possible education for our students. Deshler Middle School became a Title I school during the 2013-2014 school year, which provided much needed funds for more technology to be brought into the school. Another outcome of the move to becoming a Title I school was the opportunity for more training for our classroom teachers on how to provide higher quality instruction using the new College and Career Ready Standards.

Deshler Middle School is currently educating 353 students in grades 6-8. Our student population is 75% white, with 24 % of our student population being black and less than 1% of our population identifying themselves as multi-race. Our staff is made up of 30 members, 14% of that population is black and 86% is white. All of our classroom teachers are Highly Qualified, with 37% possessing a Master's degree or higher. The racial makeup of Tuscumbia is very similar to the racial makeup of Deshler Middle. In Tuscumbia, 76% of the citizens are white, 21% are black, and less than 3% of the population identifies as other minorities such as Asian or Hispanic
